A slender finger tapped down on the television remote in the rhythm of a steady beating drum. Every now and again, the voices and sounds of the dull daytime shows would cut into the otherwise silence of the room, only to be extinguished by the next empty channel of grey tv static the remote commanded. Leah sat comfortable in the arm chair opposite the television, long legs dangling over one arm of the chair. Her right arm she used to prop herself up on the other arm of the chair, while her left arm rested lazily on her now heavily swollen stomach. A fresh cup of tea sat next to her on the coffee table, which she sipped from every couple of minutes. Leah figured she could use a small break. She'd been couped up in the house for about 7 months while her fiancès' baby grew inside her and she was getting mighty restless. Though, that really was her own fault. If she wanted to get out of the house badly enough she could give her friends or her mother a call.. However, all that unused energy was used up, beginning in the early hours of the morning, around 5:30 am, Leah embarked on a cleaning frenzy.
Her wide, glacial eyes drifted across the room, inspecting her hard work and trying to catch anything she may have missed. The corner of her mouth twitched upwards in silent triumph. Even a dusty run-down old house, she'd made it look quite good. She hoped Ace would notice.. He went out earlier, maybe something to do with his knee or his job, she hadn't really paid attention to the details when he announced he was leaving. Not that she didn't care, at the time she was simply a girl on a mission to vaccuum every iota of dust calling her house a home. Finally, she stopped on a channel after probably running through all of them over five times. Some miserable daytime drama of forbidden love with some busty, air-headed blonde running around the screen crying her eyes out. Leah set the remote down on her stomach and picked up the cup of tea with both hands, sipping at a more rapid rate this time.
It seemed maybe half an hour that Leah had been sitting there, barely paying attention to the aweful show. It filled the silence, that was all she really required of the television. After a short while, Trinket came and lay down in front of her chair, and it seemed both females began to really get into the show. Not long after, Leah was bawling her eyes at the actress clutching her beloveds' body in a loving embrace with Trinket anxious nuzzling her leg. Leah cursed at herself and her damn hormones before bolting up to a standing position, shutting the tv off. She paced into the kitchen and braced herself against the bench, sobbing. "This is just ridiculous! Bloody ridiculous...I shouldn't have weird hormones like this still should I?" she cried to herself. Where was Ace? He'd been gone nearly all day, maybe that was the reason her hormones were so messed up today.. It had to be, right? Leah snatched the landline phone off the bench and punched in Ace's mobile number that she'd memorised a long time ago. Why couldn't she have just paid attention when he told her he was leaving?
Twice she tried calling him and twice it rung out to his message bank. Leah sighed and gently put the phone back into the receiver. He'd be home soon, he'd have to be, it was getting on dusk. The soothing ideas didn't calm her as she flitted around the kitchen looking for something to ease her hare-brain. Suddenly, she yanked open the freezer, pulled out a frozen bit of corn beed, slammed it on the table and stared intently at it for a few moments. She could cook him a nice roast dinner! Leah realised she hadn't exactly done anything nice for the guy in a while. Ah, this was perfect, Ace'd come home to a nice clean house and a nice hot dinner and for a night they'd be stress-free and happy. Maybe romantic dinner for two style? Leah dug out a roasting pot from the very back of the cupboard and filled it with water to put on the stove. When the water was ready, she carefully put the corned beef into the pot and started gathering the herbs and spices her mother had taught her to use when making this meal. Then a fleeting thought stopped her dead.. What if Ace didn't like corned beef? They'd never had it together before and they had never really had in depth conversations about food before either. She couldn't call him...and a text message asking if he liked corned beef would be a bit weird, she kind of wanted to keep it a surprise anyway. The aroma of the roast had already dominated the lower floor of the house, it certaintly attracted the attention of the two animals living in the house, who awaited eagerly at Leah's feet or their hungers to be satisfied. She couldn't give the whole thing to the dog and cat, that would be too big a waste. And what if Ace turned out liking it? Leah sighed as she slowly cut off two small chunks of the meat, blowing on it to cool them down and then feeding one each to her pets. She was just going to have to take a risk.
