Some of the older trees had grown thick and tall, branches long needing to be pruned, hanging heavy and low to the ground. They were perfect for climbing, to get up into them and grab out the apples that had just started to turn sweet, nearly white flesh gaining the rosiness of a blush to them. It was strange, fruit here seemed to grow faster, heartier than Esther had ever known it too in any other place. She clung to one of the higher branches, biting into the tart but sweet fruit, her shoes and jacket left crumpled on the ground below the only sign of anyone even being near this place.
The loud crunch of the crisp flesh giving way to teeth sounded louder in the silent afternoon, the heat was close to annoying for the young scientist who lay on the branch in the shade, a tanktop and shorts being her only clothing as long wild hair fell around her, frizzing in the heat just a bit, the bright maroon color catching the light around her. The shattered shadows of leaves rustled with the breeze as she squinted to block out the sun when it flashed through. The sun, compared to the florescent lights of the lab were kinder. The heat instead of the stale A/C air, the feeling of bark against flesh instead of a lab chair.
The lab at times felt too stark for Esther, she loved life, and spending all her time around dead bodies did little for her personality except for when she found amusement discussing her day with them as opposed to her collegues, or at least the one's who shooed her off instead of offering any company at all. It got lonely in the lab, but it was a nessecity, like secrecy about being on the island as well. Being this far away, and this exposed, it was dangerous but Esther was not one to for caution when considering that people came and disappeared all the time and so one new person would not be so bad...as long as she wasn't caught by anyone who would make it a matter.
As the sun drew across the sky she began to grab more apples, chucking them down to the ground to take with her later, her halfway eaten fruit dangling from her lips as she moved about more like an animal than a human, happily oblivious to the rest of the world around her as she satisfied herself with her little treetop world.

He hadn't been out much lately since his little thing with his new "son" Angelo, though by normal standards a boy appearing the innocent age of twelve almost thirteen should be far away from worrying about children. Just another thing that came along with being who and what he was and what he had been for the last 200 years. He had to get out and walk around, even if that meant doing it when the sun was still quite high up for his liking. It wasn't as if he would burst into to instant flames or any of the other nonsense but it was far from the comfortable light that most humans felt from the sun.
That was how Pleasant had come across this old orchard, a orchard that looked in dire need of some attention and it was apparent from the way all the fruit trees held themselves. His sensitive ears picking up on someone else in one of the trees, whoever it was was surely bigger than him though that didn't seem to be hard for most of the ones that inhabited this island.
He quietly moved towards the tree making sure to not make any noise louder than the others so they would be easily masked. Pleasant looked up the tree just as a bunch of apples hit the ground with muted thumps against the ground. Now, he could see the woman crawling around oddly almost like she thought she was some animal. "Having some fun ma'am?" Pleasant asked half-heatedly from his post next to the tree on the ground. The juice ran down her chin, pink lips sticky with the sugary tart flavor as she continued to move about, throwing more than a dozen or so apples down upon her jacket below. Perhaps Amelia would eat one if she brought it too her, or...oh! A pie! Pies were easy to make weren't they? There was a kitchen, and she could make something for her and Amelia to share and ignore the other and...
Thoughts trailed off, Esther's only comfort other than her room was Mudo's assistant. The other woman was nothing like the others in her opinion, though then again Esther knew that something like a second family here would be close to impossible. The chaos, the rules, the experiments. A soft sigh issued from her as a frown caused her forehead to wrinkle in concentration.
Was someone speaking to her?
What was worse, did someone just call her "ma'am"? She turned, looking down as she braced her form between two long branches, suspended somewhat above the other as she looked down at the kid below.
So young...I guess pickyness gets this whole thing nowhere if we act that way. She thought, feeling kind of bad to see such a young child, compared to her, in such a place. "I'm a Miss, not a ma'am...and even then I really don't like being called Miss Lindley if I can help it." She called down with a soft smile as she began to climb towards the lower branches, "And yes, it is very fun. Any food is more appetizing when one works for it. Don't you agree kiddo?" Slipping down a bit further she sat down on one of the lowest branches, still a few feet up, her legs dangling closer to the other as she sat there.
"It's dangerous to be wandering around here without a guardian...aren't you scared?" She asked, not really seeing fear or even feeling it in the air, but still whenever she did happen to bump into an islander it intrigued her how the living ones behaved.

Pleasant watched with curiosity as the woman moved around on the branches above, refusing to let go of that apple. "Sorry," he said looking up through those long eyelashes like any innocent child would, "What should I call you then?" The innocent child act always seemed to draw them in like a moth to the flame, just as it did with Angelo. Ugh, this time he wasn't taking any charity cases. If he got as far with this woman as he had with Angelo he would drain her dry or let her die, whichever came first. He was done with his good deeds for another couple hundred years, those two of his were already far more than enough.
That innocent smile had so much more meaning then he would let show because this woman had no idea how he worked for his food. He was doing it right now and if he was lucky he would catch his prey but the chance seemed low at the moment but it was worth the try. "I guess so," he replied half-heartedly, playing the same act for almost 200 years and he had it down packed now he just couldn't slip up.
He ran a hand through his hair, damn why hadn't he thought of that? Not all would fall so easily for the child thing especially not here when so much went on constantly. "Well...," he paused for a bit of a dramatic pause since he thought of himself as such a good actor, "my sister and I got separated yesterday and I hadn't found anyone scary yet." Yes, Marie could easily pass as his older sister much more so than her actually role as his daughter. Hopefully that was enough to fool this young lady because how long did this island expect him to last like this? Do You Erase What You're Thinking

Esther didn't move from her perch as she looked at the other expectantly, waiting for him to explain himself. A child alone...she was a child herself in some sense, so she knew it wasn't fun to be alone, however she also remembered Mudo chastising her for having such a soft heart when it came to islanders as most had the power to take care of themselves, or use others to do it. She wasn't about to adopt him, but she wasn't about to treat him like the plague...
That treatment she saved for vampires, making very sure to avoid traveling too much at night, or near known territories. Then again being able to spot a vampire was tricky, but at least so far here onthe island she'd remained safe. "You can call me Esther, everyone else does here. I'm not old enough to start having people address me like I'm gray and wrinkled." Though it had never stopped them when she went through school and working here. "And what should I call you?" She inquired back, swinging her legs idly as she finished her apple, dropping the core over her shoulder.
"So you lost your sister? Best place to go is the village...it's safer and most people end up there anyways. You'll find her." She encouraged, still occupied with her treetop fun as she plucked another juicy apple from the branch abover her. Taking him to the village was a bad idea, catching attention as a face not seen before and then just wandering away from the safety of the place. Tossing down an apple to him she smiled again, swinging her legs a little, "there is pleanty to be scared of here, trust me."

Pleasant watched the woman above, curiosity ticking in his skull. Maybe it was just this way and all humans were peculiar on this island, it stood true so far with the ones he had met. Something in the air, something that didn't effect him since he wasn't truly all there anymore. He didn't know he just knew they were off.
He gave a little laugh at her remark about being old and gray, no matter her odd behavior he did find her somewhat amusing. This, Esther as she called herself, was definitely different than most woman he had met her age and he was starting to like that. Though even if he did, that wasn't going to save her skin if he got the chance to get a bite. "Oh, ah, Oliver," he replied sounding a bit shy, using his middle name instead was becoming a habit but it did fit better with today's time then Pleasant did.
The village? Why the damn hell would he want to go to that place? People stuck together there at least trying to trust that there was safety in numbers while hoping that the ones they had just made friends with were not coming to rip their heads off. Now, now he would need to create some lie that could be easily bought as the truth. "Well she told me to met her," it was starting off well enough for him, "and then I got lost and somehow ended up here. So now I don't know where she is and I'm scared that maybe something scary got her." Well, that came out better then he thought it would and his worried little face was all he needed as he looked down slightly almost as if he were about to cry. My Futures Lost

"Like the musical?" Esther blurted out once the young boy had given her his name, she smiled as she grew quiet realizing that maybe she'd made a dated joke. Perhaps it was just the long hours clocked in the lab with nothing else to do other than listen to music, watch movies, and dissect dead bodies of failed experiments and creatures that had been captured but she just assumed that many people knew as much random pop culture things as she did even though many didn't even have what was needed to do such things. Shifting a little more on her branch she leaned forward, hands grasping one of the branches in front of her.
She looked down her smile growing a little tight as worry appeared in bright eyes. A lost little boy, scared, missing his sister who may or may not be dead. "Well there are a lot of scary things..." she uttered, almost absentmindedly as she would around one of her coworkers. She didn't like the scary unless they were dead on a table, especially vampires as one hand moved to the apex of where her neck met her collar bone, and old pale scar barely visible against her fair flesh. If Mudo found out she was even considering the idea of taking the boy to the village...
Esther could hear the lecture as she moved about nervously. Why couldn't she be like her coworkers at that moment? They would walk away, or maybe they'd drag the boy to the lab and make him the newest test. Her thoughts raced with a list of things that they might do that she could not right then, a frown forming upon her lips as she finally grasped the branch in front of her once more before slipping off the one she sat on.
"Watch out Oli." She spoke softly, dangling for a few seconds above her discarded possession and fallen apples before she dropped down with very little grace as she stumbled forward a few feet. "Okay, I'm going to take you to the village, and then I'll ask if anyone has found your sister...they could find her." It was the best she could do as she grabbed up olive drab jacket, pulling it on as she began to pocket a few of the apples. Perhaps not enough for a pie now she thought with a sigh before smiling back up at Oliver before looking around for a moment to get her barings.
"Lets get you home." Esther held our her hand for the young boy to take, "Don't be scared, have some hope...it's all that we humans have that's worth something in this world." With that she started off through the orchard, pulling the other along with her.

"I doubt it," Pleasant said before thinking, it was just he was born far before that was even made. Ah well, to late now to take it back so he would just go with it now. Besides this woman didn't know a thing about him and he was just over thinking things now. Yeah that was right, she knew nothing of who he really was. He smiled at the thought as he moved out of the way for her to land on the ground.
He held back a laugh as she had stumbled across the ground, all chances of her being a threat to him washed away with that little display. "The village?" he asked, damn this one was stuck on bringing him there for some damned reason. Why couldn't she just forget that part? "I don't know," he said acting worried and trying to stall her long enough to make her forget.
Then she took his hand and tried to pull him along, it took so much not to bite her hand then and there. Pleasant was all fine playing the children part but couldn't stand being dragged around like one. "But what if she isn't there?" he asked as he dragged his feet, "What if she really is gone? Then what happens?" Stop all Your Acting Now

Most people were relieved to be taken somewhere safe like the village. There were people there, numbers of people, and despite some being of supernatural backgrounds it was slowly becoming a community from what she could see. Lilith had become a leader it seemed, and though Esther had never seen him she was impressed at what had happened. This young boy however seemed reluctant to go to such a place, and she just couldn't understand why he would be so hesitant to go.
"They're not bad people." A lie, she wouldn't know how they'd treat a lost child. All she knew is that it would be the one place where any person would go...no, the only place to go on this island. Slowly she stopped moving forward, lowering herself to one knee, "This place is no place to be alone in, to be alone can be dangerous Oliver." Her hands went to his shoulders, touching them gently in almost a motherly way.
How could she explain to him that he couldn't come with her? A kid didn't belong among the scientists even though she was on herself...she couldn't justify letting him become another body on her table either if he wasn't allowed to stay. "Don't say that about your sister. You have to stay positive that you aren't alone here. You're too young to think that way, we'll find her, and if we don't I'll find you someone who can." Then she would make her way far back to her lab, far away where she would never see or know what would happen to him.
Pulling him in close she hugged him tightly, "I'm here right now though, and you're not alone...so lets not worry and try to find your sister. Now lets go get you some place safe, alright?"

He didn't speak at all as she continued on, he just watched. Then she got lower and his resistance was weakening, he may be an older vampire but he wasn't immune to hunger and now her so close to him like this was quite tempting. Now her words were just noise in the background to him as he watched her just waiting for a chance to strike.
The biggest surprise, she hugged him. The fool of a woman actually hugged him, if only she knew all the thoughts that were circulating behind those blue eyes she would already be running as fast as those feet could carry her. Lucky for Pleasant, silly humans couldn't read minds.
He didn't struggle from the hug, but rather well embrace the embrace. "But aren't you all alone?" he asked picking up on what she said earlier though his voice sounding more confident and sure than someone who should have been a young adolescent. His head already near that smooth neck of hers and those fangs slid easily into there rightful place.
Then, with no more of a warning than that question he latched onto her neck. That greedy little mouth trying to steal her blood for his own use. Rainbow Skies Turn to Grey

Perhaps it was how a child like Oliver reacted to her, but something in air felt like it had changed suddenly. It was something she didn't like, the feeling that something had come up without her realizing it. The way he spoke bothered her, the scared voice seemed to have changed, the whole feeling that the little boy was not who he seemed to have been. Still she couldn't quite place her finger on it as she spoke softly not yet feeling how close his breath was against her neck.
"I'm not really too alone. I'm not really suppose to tell but-" She was going to simply tell the boy that she had her "family" even if they weren't the siblings and friends she wanted all the time. The work they did kept them isolated, but it was a needed measure for their safety.
"Safety" The word meant little, changing in a split second for Esther as she knelt down close to the boy, not registering the small pain near her throat. A pinch, perhaps the result of the embrace, but soon she felt the pull. Being drained of blood was a familiar feeling. It wasn't like slowly drowning...yes one because woozy and blacked out after a while, but the feeling of it at the beginning was unmistakable to one who had felt it already. It was like every vein and artery was being pulled on by strings, the circulation of blood interrupted by a new force stronger than the heart which kept trying to pump blood.
Esther froze, fear rising in her eyes and tears slipped down her cheek. The pain, the memories coming back in a rush as she tried to scream, but the only sound that came out was a choked sob. Fingers clenched at the shoulders of the young boy, trying to push him off. It hurt, it hurt so much. She just wanted to hide from the pain, tear away though she knew that any sudden movements would cost her all her blood. Panic rose up as she swatted at him with her free hand, her other frantically grabbing at her jacket trying to get into the pockets.
No...she couldn't die like this, not after having survived before. What about the others? Would they care or notice? Esther whimpered softly, scrabbling without losing anymore blood.
"Oh god...oh god...stop, please god stop..." She whispered, tears pouring down her cheeks.

Pleasant took hold of the hand on his shoulder as he slid his fangs back out of her skin and closed up the wound so she wouldn't loose so much blood. Sure, it was dangerous to leave someone alive when they knew what he was but he honestly didn't know how many were on the island and killing off them every time he met one probably wasn't the best idea.
He looked at her now tear streaked face, his own not giving away emotions like it was so easily before. Pleasant was just enjoying looking in those scarred eyes as his hand still gripped onto her wrist not wanting to let go and let her run just yet. "Sorry," he gave a twisted smirk, "I never had a sister."
Honestly, Pleasant had too much fun playing with humans now. It was something that had come with the years of living the way he had and they way he played them so easily. Just like now with this young woman who didn't taste that bad. This Life is Yours

Fear rippled through Esther as she still struggled trying to get away. Her hand had almost found the taser that she always had on her for protection when she felt her wrist grabbed in a tight, controlling grip. Her body trembled as she felt him draw back, healing her wound. Her last time with a vampire he had not been so kind to heal her, so kind to give her a moment to collect her wits to think.
The pale scar on the other side of her throat stood out against her skin, the few hours spent out in the sun every few days touching everything but the small mass of scars. She'd been fifteen, already in college, an adult mind in a child's body thinking herself safe on a college campus. One night had all there been to change that as she could remember the young gentleman who joined her on her walk back towards her dorm in the dead of night after hours of studying. He seemed to be a student, seemed to be a nice guy who joked with her until they left the safety of the street lamps as she took a shortcut through one of the campus parks. The next thing Esther remembered was being pinned up against a tree, a pain searing through her throat as he drank from her. The only thing that had saved her from death or being turned was the sudden appearance of a fellow student who had chased the man off, leaving her on the edge of death and a scar that would remind her for the rest of her life of what happened.
She look up at the child-like vampire in front of her, still struggling against the grip. His confession of never having a sister, by now she knew that it had all been a lie but his words were one last twist, a jab at her own foolish nature to be kind to him. "Please let me go." She pulled on her arm, surprised how such a small hand could hold her so firmly, the small amount of sudden blood loss leaving her feeling dizzy as if she stood up way to fast. "Please, I swear I won't tell anyone. Just let me go."

"I don't know," Pleasant said still holding on to her wrist with that fierce little grip, "People tend to act funny when they learn secrets, like mine." Those eyes now glowing and his fangs still out as he spoke to her since he had nothing to hide from her now, well at least in that sense.
His thumb running over the fingers on his free hand going over his nails, almost like he was holding her against her will with the other. Though the thoughts of killing her were still so tempting and it would make up for last time with that new boy of his. He still hadn't' figured out why Marie had wanted to save him or why he had, but the past was the past. He would just have to pay his new 'son' a visit quite soon.
Pleasant looked down at the woman who was still struggling to get away a dangerous smile appearing on his face. "Besides," he said continuing on what he was saying a few moments before, "I really do not want to." I Already Know

This couldn't be happening....oh god it couldn't be...
She kept repeating it over and over again in her head, the only thought being able to drown out the memories of last time as she continued to cry, struggling, whimpering like a wounded animal as she kept pulling on her hand trying to get it away. Each jerk just reminding her of where she was and just what she was with. "Please just let me go...please don't do this...not again." She whispered, breath rushed. A panic attack almost instantly setting in as Esther found it getting harder and harder to breath, like someone was tightening their hands around her throat.
She wanted Amelia right now, wanted to be in the lab among the dead bodies talking with them as if they could actually hear her. Hell, she wanted to be around the other jerks she often had to work with...just not here right now. In some part of her mind she started praying to a god she long thought she'd lost faith in, trying to make a bargain for some deus ex machina release.
The bright eyes turned up, thick long lashes catching tears as she rose to her knees. Perhaps it was desperation that made her forget for a moment how weak she was physically compared to the immortal child. She shoved forward, one hand drawing back as she tried to lash out, her first driving for that innocent face with the cruelest look. "Let me go!" Esther screamed, her voice carrying high over the trees with all the fear, anger, and confusion like a mouse trapped in a tight corner by it's feline predator.
