The sun had just sunk under the deep blue ocean, bathing the island's beach in bright moonlight. It was a nice night; the temperature was pleasant, and the sky was clear. And yet only the brave, or the incredibly stupid would walk this beach at night. For there were predators here... Creatures of the water that feasted on the flesh of their prey. But somehow, despite the known fact that the beach was home to a number of Kelpies, at least a few beings would venture down for a midnight swim, or a walk on the beach. Of course, some survived... But most of them perished. It was the way of nature. Everything needed to eat.
But some of these beach-prowlers didn't just hunt for food, but rather for sport. They hunted to appease the blood lust pulsing within their veins. One of which was the lone shadow currently wallowing in the shallows. She was obviously feminine, and appeared human in the pearly moonlight. Her lower half was obscured under the water's surface, but her torso and above were perfectly visible. Her back was facing land, blond hair appearing silver in the lighting. She appeared nude from the back, because the thin strip of grass that tied around her back was hidden beneath her golden mane. Admittedly, the skimpy grass bikini-type shirt and matching grass skirt couldn't really be considered clothes... But hell, she wasn't naked.
Her thin arms hung limply by her sides, fingers half-submerged in the ocean's cool embrace. She looked ghostly, like some departed spirit returning to look at the moon. Mist rolled off the top of the ocean around her, as if her body temperature was heating it and turning the liquid into gas, when in fact the rolling mist was a natural occurrence, albeit an eerie one. Since she was turned from the beach, her features could not be made out. Since she was not in her other form, the great chestnut mare, a mere human could not know of her Kelpie heritage, unless they could feel the odd, alluring aura floating around her.
Her name was Aureus, and to be honest, she was well-known among certain groups residing on the island. Well-known as in infamous... Or notorious, if you please. For she was a monster... A murderer... A siren. Death was her game; killing just the action with which you play, and blood the ink to keep score. She was evil. No one questioned it anymore. Some thought she was a poor lost soul at one point, but they soon learned their error. Aur was deranged. Kelpies killed, of course, to live. But she took it to a new level... She was bent on consuming flesh, and had even taken to sipping at blood after a kill, like a common Vampire.
Some called her crazy, others called her the Devil's spawn... But whatever she was, she was here, waiting for her next victim. There was no pang in her belly, but rather a need to kill. So... Here she was, poised to end yet another life so quickly, so easily.

It was almost time. Their plan was being set in motion. The witch would be on his way to the swamp any time now. He had been sent to the surface to run a few test. Sure, to a lot of people this may seem dangerous- he was just an ordinary human. But that's where people would be wrong. Scientists weren't technically a race, yet they were superior, in their own category above humans and the other mortal species.
And if Dr. Mudo's project went correctly, eventually they would be able to tap into the magic species' powers and control them- or even learn the secrets to immortality. The windows of possibilities were endless, and Dmitri wanted to be right there for it.
Now you see, on the outside, Dmitri looked like a nice guy. He was a little scruffy but had a warm, trustworthy smile. No one would be able to peg him for a ruthless torturer-- or one to stand by idly as a living creature writhed in pain before expiring on an operation table. Their trial-runs were brutal and vile. The pile of rotting bodies in the swamp showed as much.
No, Dmitri was certainly not a nice man when it came right down to it.
He ran his hand over the sands of the beach. To think that he'd had a hand in this.... sure, he did postly manual labor. He hated sitting behind computers all day, but without the scientists like him, the island would have never been built. The entire structure felt alive, even though everything had been calculated and created before hand. It passed as natural, and it was perfect.
Even the amount of creatures they'd managed to collect was impressive if not a bit surprising. They even had a witch here, something that not many people could claim to have accomplished. To have captured a witch was a feat in of itself, but they hadn't merely captured him. They had created him.
Dmitri continued walking until he saw a sillouhette. He quickly looked at something that resembled an mp3 player-- kelpie, it said. Well, he wasn't stupid enough to venture to the surface without protection, and if worst came to worst he could always shoot her if she decided to attack.
But instead of thinking negatively, he simply stopped a few paces away from here. "The ocean really is peaceful, isn't it" it was his failed attempt to start a conversation, but it wasn't as if he was going to invest more than a facade in this anyways. She was like all of the others: perfectly expendable.

She sensed his presence before he spoke. She heard the steady intake of breath, and then the exhale. She could almost taste the rich, hot blood flowing through his flesh. Yum. "The ocean is really peaceful, isn't it?" His voice was male, and her top lip slid upwards in a sly grin, before it vanished, and her face became blank. She didn't reply for several minutes, nor did she even acknowledge him until a few minutes after. She turned her back on the moon and the endless ocean to focus her incredibly sharp blue eyes on the human. Ohh my, he was simply delectable. Delicious... Not in a sexual sense, for Aur rarely felt an attraction to humans, but rather in the meaning of any Kelpie.
She eyed him, mouth curling up into a seductive smile that held the edge of a smirk. He'd seen her in her human form... Now if she changed he'd know that she was a Kelpie, of course, he might already... But she highly doubted that. Humans were so pitifully stupid. So she'd have to bring him in this form. Rather, she'd try to bring him in, so that she could strip flesh from muscle, drink the mixture of blood and saltwater, and revel in his pain. She wanted to drag him into the murky depths until he could breath no longer... Until he entered her world, the world of water, seaweed, and blood.
Underneath the seemingly glowing outside was an inside so corrupt, disfigured, and splattered with blood that heaven was in no part of her future. When she departed this world her home would be Hell. Then again... What had created this monster? It was unknown... Not even Aureus herself could answer that question. Her history was as murky as swamp water. Blinking, the Kelpie spoke in a voice hauntingly smooth and sweet. "Right now it is, but peace is easily broken." He didn't even known how easily... She mused to herself, holding back smirks of contempt. She was willing to play for a bit... Games were always fun. But it'd have to end soon enough, she wouldn't be able to hold herself back from a kill forever. Arching thin eyebrows, she waited for his response.

The scientist kept his different from the girl still, taking a seat on one of the shore's rocks as he observed her. He knew that not all of the kelpie they had caught were vicious, flesh-eating creatures. One or two only fed on the life that resided inside the sea. But they had brought some of the ones of legend- the ones who killed mercilessly and for fun. He was itching to get his hands on their dna so that he could work on their structures. If he could get those horse bodies stabilized and infused with some daimon blood, perhaps they could create something even stronger.
But to create something stronger wasn't always the goal, and in fact, there were some dangers with making the creations too strong. Sometimes he thought that Dr. Mudo was crazy for trying to control the angele and the witch- but sometimes he thought it was genius. If they could harness the magical creatures' powers, then they would be stronger than any other being- mortal or not. It was like "playing god" but what was so wrong about that? Dmitri wasn't so blind as some of his fellow scientists. He knew what they were doing wasn't good for mankind. It was selfish gain only, and he was working fully aware of that. But perhaps that was just the kind of guy he was. He wanted to be god.
But he wasn't so blind as to not recognize his own mortal capabilities. As a human, he wasn't a match for a kelpie-- normally, that was. But he wasn't just any human, he was a human that knew how to hunt the predators on the island and turn them into the prey, but in order to not fall victim to his own trap, he couldn't get a big head. He couldn't assume the fight was won. He looked at her with knowing eyes and smiled his charming smile. "That's very true," he agreed. "Especially with all of the natural... predators on this island. Only a matter of time before we start turning against each other." Was he trying to warn her to not get her hopes up of messing with him? Kelpies could tell by scent what a species was, now couldn't they?
