Rhys woke up on a cot in the dilapidated little shack where Delora had left him after she'd stitched up his leg and gotten him something to eat. It had been a few days since then. The whole evening after they'd gotten back from the swamp was a bit of a blur, since he had plied himself with "medicinal" whiskey he found in the first aid supplies to keep from feeling the full pain of sewing up his leg. It had been a traumatic first day, to say the least. But now he had learned some things about the island, and he felt a little more able to cope with his predicament.
Whatever those twisted bodies had been, they were gone now. People had gone back to the swamp to see them, and to find out what was keeping Lilith and Nero, but there was no trace of either. Had others not seen the bodies like Rhys had, he might have believed it was simply a bad dream, but he knew it wasn't. He didn't know what they were, but he knew they were real. He began to realize that this island had many unnatural secrets.
Delora had filled him in on some of them, like the witch Lilith and his shifter lover Nero. If he hadn't seen Lilith's potion and its instant healing powers go to work on the girl at the swamp, he probably would have thought she was just crazy. As it was, he still wasn't sure that turning into an animal was possible. Then again, with what he'd seen so far, who could say what was truly impossible?
He sat up and slid over to the edge of the cot, reaching for the makeshift cane he'd whittled from a dead tree branch for himself all day yesterday, using a knife also salvaged from the medical supplies. What else did he have to do, if he couldn't walk around for very long without straining his stitches? At least Delora had left him some food, and there was clean water in a little spring fountain at the center of the village, not far from his little hut. He stood up, testing his weight while leaning on the cane. His concussion was healed and his depth perception was returning (though still not completely fixed), but his stitches would probably take a couple of weeks to heal. He found himself wishing the witch would come back so he could drink one of those potions and not have to sit around like an invalid all day.
Limping out the doorway (there was no actual door), he looked around to see if there was anyone he could ask about getting some more food for the next week or so. Delora's little supply was getting sparse, and he really needed something a bit more fresh. He knew there was an orchard and garden around somewhere, but he didn't know where, and he was in no condition to go wandering about. He hoped his newfound skill in whittling would count for something if he had to bargain for food. Otherwise, he was in deep shit.

He had been in either the forest or swamp since he came to on this place and that curiosity of what else was out there was finally getting to the young man. Rein knew there was more to the island than just trees and swamp land and he was now determined to see just what that was, even if he did have to go through open ground.
That was how he had found the collection of worn buildings, or the village, and whatever else it held. Rein would have normally used the buildings for cover or at least to hide in but some of them looked like they would and could fall right over on top of him. He really did not want to know what would happen if he was stuck under a building, so the young experiment was stuck to taken the little dirt roads.
Watching the houses seeing if there was anyone else around in case he would have to bolt back to the cover of the trees. Though that hadn't lasted long when he noticed the clouds over head moving through the sky. Those large whit shapes in the sky never seemed to miss an opportunity to distract the boy from whatever he was doing. So, here he was now walking down the streets with that odd little step and his face up to wards the sky.
Rein continued his little walk, his mind so far from his original objective of watching out for could be predators while finding new parts of the island. Then he heard a noise of another odd step not so far in front of him that instantly put him back on alert. He caught sight of the man with stick in hand in front of him and Rein was much too out in the open to turn tail and act like he was never there. So, he just stopped, those eyes watching the older man. The only thing that moved was the purple flower that stuck out of his mouth as he watched the other, all that curiosity kicked into overdrive.

It was somewhat cloudy out, which was good for the sunburn on Rhys's face and arms. He had spent more time exposed to the bright sunlight all at once that first day than he had in a long time, and his skin wasn't being very forgiving about it. He had the awful suspicion he was going to have a terrible farmer's tan after this, but what could he do? At least he had some shelter now, so he didn't have to be out in the open all the time.
Looking around for someone to ask about finding food, Rhys spotted a boy not far off, standing completely still, something purple sticking out of his mouth. There was a blank expression on his face, not unlike that of a deer caught in headlights. Something about him seemed strange, but he couldn't put his finger on it, at least not from this distance. His depth perception was still not quite all the way back and it was making him slightly nearsighted. He took a few tentative steps toward the boy until they were a little closer and his vision cleared. What he saw made him blink and rub his eyes in disbelief.
"That can't be right; my eyes must be playing tricks on me again," he murmured to himself, looking up again.
No, it was no illusion--the boy had long, furry black-and-white ears and feet... like a rabbit. There was no explanation for it that Rhys could think of, and yet there he was, staring at a boy with rabbit features. In fact, wasn't the boy standing stock-still just like a rabbit might if caught out in the open with no place to run? Suddenly he believed what Delora had told him about shifters. Was this kid a shifter, or something else? Just when he thought he was beginning to understand this island, something came along to teach him how far he was from the truth.
He tried to regain his composure, but his voice was a little shaky as he asked his question. "A-Are you a shifter?"

Rein was curious about the older man, maybe it was the way he walked with that stick, he didn't know but so much curiosity in that mind of his. All that rabbit in him was bringing out more and more curiosity in him as he spent time on this island. Such as now, when he just stood watching the man come a bit closer as he himself just watched chewing on that thin green stem.
He moved closer this time, something he would have usually now done but he wanted to see this man better up close. Now, Rein was close enough that if he wanted to he could have reached out and touched the man but that was much to daring for him. He had already moved this close to the man, he wasn't about to do something crazy like touch him.
Rein shook his head to answer the man's question. For some reason people here seemed to be stuck on this 'shifter' thing, but he knew that wasn't right. He was nothing like that other man that could change into a fox, he was just him always looking as he did now.

Rhys leaned heavily on his cane, looking the boy up and down again. He almost felt like reaching out to touch his ears, just to see if they were indeed real, which he could do now that they were close enough, but he didn't want to alarm the kid. So he wasn't a shifter. What was he, then? Just when Rhys thought he'd begun to understand things a little, Ivory threw another kink in the works. It was as if fate enjoyed exasperating him. Well, he couldn't dwell on it. Though he suddenly wished he had a cigarette.
"If you're not a shifter, and you're clearly not a human, what are you?" he asked, wondering if maybe there was something wrong with the boy, then continued talking before he could get an answer out. "...You're not mute or something, are you? If you are, I'm sorry I'm asking questions, it's just I've never encountered some of the things on this island and I'm a bit curious. I don't mean to offend you."
He paused for a split second to catch his breath, and suddenly something inside his head clicked. What he'd seen at the swamp, the twisted bodies... they reminded him of this boy. A look of delighted revelation dawned on Rhys's face.
"You're like those bodies at the swamp, aren't you? I didn't realize it before, but they were all part animal! How did something like that happen? Is it a natural occurrance here? I wouldn't be surprised..."
He finally stopped rambling long enough for the kid to get in a word.

Rein listened to the man as he chewed on the stem of the flower. It was hard not to listen to the man talking with that rushed excited tone as he did. They sure did get excited here or maybe it was what the older man said, he wasn't human, maybe thats why they always seemed to get excited around him.
"Was human," Rein finally put in after the man went quiet finally. He was human once right? And thats why he received all that pain because human wasn't good enough, right? Thats what all those things were for, all those test to see how well his hearing was and how well those feet of his worked. It was because he wasn't good enough, isn't that what they said? Well, if they hadn't then they must have meant it at least.
"Bodies in the swamp?" Rein asked curious a bit now. He hadn't seen any bodies like him in the swamp when he had been there last. Did that mean that there was more of people like him walking around or did the other just mean that they didn't look human like him? Rein wasn't really sure on which the man meant and it was starting to bother him now.

"You mean you used to be human? ...I'm not sure what to make of that," he said, the wheels in his head turning visibly but snagging on the idea. Was there any plausible way for that to happen? Then again, was there any plausible way for the boy to be half-rabbit to begin with? All that Rhys thought he knew was being challenged. The laws of the universe seemed to have shifted to allow for some incredible things on this island. Was that the fate of all the humans who came to Ivory, to be transformed somehow into half-animals? Until he had more information, he couldn't make any informed judgements about that. Even so, he touched his own ear before he could stop himself, to see if it was still normal. Then he shook his head at his own thoughts. What an absurd idea.
The boy's question about the bodies in the swamp brought him out of his reverie. He launched into explanation mode. It was somewhat comforting to be able to talk about something he knew about.
"Well, they're not there anymore, or at least that's what everyone says. The bodies disappeared along with Lilith and Nero. But I saw them. Hell, I woke up face-to-face with one. It was distorted, like its head had been trying to morph into an alligator snout or something. Come to think of it, all of them had animal-like qualities of one sort or another. At the time, it just didn't occur to me, but seeing you..."
His voice trailed off as he wondered again what the connection could be between all of this, but he came up with nothing. He went back to the more pressing matter of what he had initially come out of the shack for in the first place.
"Anyway, do you know where I can get something to eat around here? Or do you know if the vegetable garden is nearby? I need to get some more food, but, well-" he indicated his leg, where a blood-stained handkerchief covered the hole in his pants "-I can't go very far, as you can see."

Rein just chewed on his flower listening to this older man and well watching him too. The way he looked at him and then went and touched his own ear which only seemed to make Rein more sure that he was wrong some way or another. Now while Rhys thought he was being tested Rein was becoming convinced that he was something that had been wrong and all that pain was really his punishment, it was all very confusing to the boy. He knew he should have just stuck to the trees of the forest and left all this odd land to its self.
Chewing on that green stem, it slowly disappearing, as the man went into this whole thing. Rein only understanding about half the things he said but the ending making more sense than the beginning. "Lilith and Nero? They are people?" he asked still confused on all that the man had just told him. "Alligator....," Rein said slowly almost to himself, well at least that meant there wasn't more of him walking around the island right? Just people with animal-like appearances like the man said? Well, according to him they were all dead in the swamp but Rein had just been in the swamp. Though the man didn't seem like he was lying but evidently he was looking for food.
Rein stared at the man for a moment, that one brown and one white covered eye flickering over the man's face quickly before his nose twitched ending it. Rein reached in to the kangaroo pouch on the front of the "found" hoodie he wore pulling out another flower like the one he had. "There is also the orchard," Rein said offering the flower incase the man wanted it but he had heard talk of this 'orchard' with all its fruit trees.

"Haven't you heard of Lilith and Nero? How long have you been here? I've only been here a few days, myself." It occurred to him that maybe the boy hadn't met anyone considerate enough to explain things to him, as Delora had done for him. "Lilith is a witch who lives on this island, and Nero is his shape-shifter lover." Rhys blushed slightly and laughed nervously, realizing he had said that a bit too matter-of-factly, especially to a kid. Of course, Lilith did look like a girl (he had been genuinely surprised when Delora told him otherwise), but it was still a little odd to him. He shook his head to clear his mind. Obviously the boy had no idea what he was talking about. Admittedly, he wasn't making much sense.
"An orchard? Is it very far?" He straightened up next to his walking stick, looking around for any signs of it nearby, but his eyesight just wasn't normal yet and all he saw was a blur of trees and dilapidated old shacks. Was that what Delora had said, not garden? Maybe the word had gotten switched around in his head. He had been a little out of it, after all.
Then, with a start, he realized something.
"I'm sorry! I haven't even introduced myself!" he said, chuckling at his own folly. "My name is Rhys. What's yours?"

"I don't know," was the first thing out of the boy's mouth with the man's question. Rein blamed it on being caught of guard or maybe the fact that he really didn't know was getting to him. "Lover," Rein mumbled the word mostly to himself watching the man blush as he talked about these other people. Though that word lover tapped something inside that mind of his, something that he couldn't access now but yet the feeling of it being important still there.
Rein chewed on the stem of the flower, a habit that just seemed right to him but had gotten many questions from the others he had met. He just liked the taste and the feeling of chewing on something, maybe just more rabbit trying to take control but he didn't mind it so much. He turned ready to show the man with the stick where the orchard was getting tired of all this conversation that this man was trying to have. The orchard was all good for his tastes, though climbing up a tree was a bit tricky though doable.
"Rein," he said simply as he turned his head back around to the man with the bright bloom sticking out of his mouth. He motioned for Rhys to follow him but soon stopping because even with his own odd step it was faster than the other's with the stick.

Rhys sighed inwardly. This kid just wasn't very talkative, was he? He wondered if he had ever even said more than six words at a time. On the other hand, here he was, chatting up a storm. Well, no matter. He could talk enough for the both of them if he wanted.
He watched the boy chewing on the flower stem in his mouth. It reminded him of farmers chewing on pieces of hay for some reason. What strange associations came to mind at times.
"Rein? What an interesting name. Well, it's nice to meet you," he said, painfully aware of how boring he must seem in comparison to everyone else on this odd island.
He hurried along behind Rein as he led the way toward the orchard. The boy was much faster, even with his unique, sort of bouncing gait, and Rhys found himself falling behind quite easily. It was harder than it seemed to walk with a cane, but he was getting the hang of it as they continued.
(OOC: Want to keep going in the orchard now?)
